Letter from James Davie Butler to his former classmate John H. Whiteside, Esq. James Butler was a scholar, teacher, minister and traveler. He taught college for nine years in Madison, Wisconsin; also at Wabash College (Indiana) and Norwich College (Vermont) and served as minister in Peabody (Kansas?) and in Cincinnati. In this letter he tells about his wife and children, his career teaching and as a clergyman, and his travels abroad. The letter is dated June 13, 1873, in Burlington, Iowa, and is handwritten on letterhead of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, Land Department, of Burlington, Iowa. It concludes: "...am still a Greek bookworm, though sometimes torn away from books. Pray tell me something of yr experience."
